The Family Friction Score
Most attraction reviews tell you what a place is like. They rarely tell you what a visit will actually cost you in effort - the parking walk, the line in the sun, the moment your toddler needs a bathroom and the nearest one is a ten-minute walk back to the entrance. The Family Friction Score exists to answer that specific question, with a number you can compare across attractions and a reason behind every point of it.
This page explains exactly how the score is built, so you can judge it - and so we can't quietly move the goalposts later. The Family Friction Score is not a quality rating. A high-friction attraction can still be worth visiting - some of the best experiences take real effort. What the score measures is how much logistical difficulty a family should expect, so you can decide whether that trade-off works for your kids, on that day, at that age.
The 8 Factors to Evaluate
Every attraction is scored from 0 to 5 on each of the following. 0 means the factor creates no real difficulty. 5 means it creates the maximum difficulty a family is likely to encounter.
1. Parking & Arrival
How hard it is to get from your car (or transit stop) to the entrance.
- 0 - Free parking directly at the entrance, under 2 minutes on foot
- 1-2 - Paid but close, or free with a 5-10 minute walk
- 3-4 - Paid and distant (shuttle required), or a difficult transit route with kids and a stroller
- 5 - No parking available, or a long transfer/shuttle sequence required with strollers and gear
2. Queue & Wait Time
Expected time standing in line, not time spent inside.
- 0 - Little to no queuing, or timed entry guarantees admission
- 1-2 - Queues possible at peak times (weekends/season), typically under 15 minutes
- 3-4 - Regular queues of 15-45 minutes
- 5 - Queues regularly exceed 45 minutes, often without shade or seating
3. Heat & Weather Exposure
How much of the visit happens outdoors, exposed to sun or weather.
- 0 - Fully climate-controlled indoor space
- 1-2 - Partly outdoors, with adequate shade or shelter
- 3-4 - Mostly outdoors, limited shade
- 5 - Fully open-air with no shelter, 2+ hours of continuous sun/heat exposure expected
4. Walking Distance & Terrain
Total ground covered and how even the surface is.
- 0 - Compact site, everything within short walking distance, flat and even surfaces
- 1-2 - Medium-sized site, some uneven ground
- 3-4 - Large, park-scale site requiring significant walking
- 5 - Extensive grounds with hills, sand, or gravel - 2+ miles of walking to see the main areas
5. Stroller & Mobility Access
How usable the site is with a stroller or mobility device.
- 0 - Fully paved, ramps/elevators available, stroller rental on-site
- 1-2 - Mostly accessible, a few areas require a detour
- 3-4 - Some key areas are inaccessible with a stroller (stairs, narrow paths)
- 5 - Strollers not permitted in main areas, or the terrain itself is impassable (sand, stairs with no alternative route)
6. Restroom & Baby-Care Access
Availability of restrooms and infant-care facilities across the site, not just at the entrance.
- 0 - Clean restrooms frequently available, with changing tables and a nursing/feeding space
- 1-2 - Restrooms available regularly, but no changing tables
- 3-4 - Restrooms are infrequent or require returning to the main entrance
- 5 - Almost no restroom access across the site
7. Sensory & Crowd Load
How loud, crowded, and overstimulating the environment tends to be.
- 0 - Typically quiet and uncrowded, easy to find a calm spot
- 1-2 - Moderate crowds, quiet areas exist
- 3-4 - Frequently loud and crowded, few quiet areas
- 5 - Consistently packed and loud, with no spaces to retreat to during sensory overload
8. Schedule Flexibility
How easily a family can leave early without losing most of the value of the visit.
- 0 - Free entry/exit, a short visit (under 1 hour) is fully worthwhile
- 1-2 - Flexible, but a visit needs roughly 2 hours to feel worthwhile
- 3-4 - Requires a timed ticket with no re-entry, minimum 3-4 hours
- 5 - All-day ticket with no re-entry; leaving early forfeits most of the ticket's value
How the Final Score Is Calculated
The eight factors are added together for a total out of 40. That total maps to one of three categories, shown as the badge on every attraction page:
- 0-13 → Low Friction - "An easy family day"
- 14-26 → Medium Friction - "Doable with some planning"
- 27-40 → High Friction - "Best for families who've prepared - worth weighing carefully with very young kids"
How It's Shown on Every Page
The badge (Low / Medium / High) is never the only thing you see. Every attraction page includes an expandable breakdown showing the score for each of the eight factors individually, along with a short explanation of why that specific score was given - not just that walking distance scored a 4, but what about the site earned it a 4 instead of a 2. If you disagree with a score after reading the reasoning, that's useful - tell us, and we'll take another look at the source.
Every attraction is scored against the same eight criteria, by the same process described in our Editorial Standards - checked against official information (site maps, accessibility pages, venue policies) and dated like every other fact on this site. We don't adjust scores based on advertising relationships.
